Understanding ASTM A694/A694M
ASTM A694/A694M is the standard specification for carbon and alloy steel forgings used in pipe flanges, forged fittings, valves, and parts for high-pressure transmission service. It is commonly referenced in oil and gas pipeline projects where components must withstand high internal pressures and demanding service conditions.
The standard covers forged or rolled steel products, meaning the material is mechanically worked to refine its grain structure and improve mechanical properties. Parts can be ordered either to purchaser-supplied dimensions or to ASME or MSS dimensional standards, such as ASME B16.5 or B16.47 for flanges. This flexibility is important for procurement engineers who need to match existing piping systems or comply with project-specific dimensional requirements.
ASTM A694 defines several grades based on minimum yield strength. These grades are designated with an "F" prefix followed by a number, such as F52, F60, F65, and so on. The number indicates the minimum yield strength in ksi. For example, F52 has a minimum yield strength of 52 ksi. Higher grades offer greater strength but may have different weldability and toughness characteristics. The selection of grade must be based on the design pressure, temperature, and service environment, as well as the requirements of the applicable piping code.
Key Procurement Considerations
When specifying ASTM A694 forgings, you must clearly define the following in your RFQ:
