Schedule numbers are a convenient shorthand, but they do not translate automatically from carbon steel to stainless steel pipe. Buyers who treat them as interchangeable risk ordering the wrong wall thickness, which can affect pressure design, fitting fit-up, and inspection acceptance.
Why Schedule Numbers Are Not Material-Agnostic
In international piping procurement, schedule is used to describe wall thickness, but it is defined inside a dimensional standard. ASME B36.10M covers the standardization of dimensions of welded and seamless wrought steel pipe for high or low temperatures and pressures. ASME B36.19M covers the standardization of dimensions of welded and seamless wrought stainless steel pipe. Because two different standards govern these material groups, the same schedule designation can have different wall thicknesses in specific size ranges.
The standards themselves distinguish pipe from tube. Pipe NPS 12 (DN 300) and smaller have outside diameters numerically larger than their corresponding size numbers. This is true in both standards, so schedule alone does not tell you the full dimensional picture. You need the standard, the nominal size, and the schedule to identify a wall thickness from the correct table.
Where ASME B36.10M and B36.19M Diverge
The most important practical difference is that stainless steel schedules in B36.19M are identified with the suffix "S". That suffix is not decoration. It is used to differentiate B36.19M pipe from B36.10M pipe.
The ASME B36.19M description calls out specific differences:
- NPS 14 through 22 inclusive (DN 350–550), Schedule 10S, wall thicknesses are not the same as those of ASME B36.10M.
- NPS 12 (DN 300), Schedule 40S, wall thickness is not the same as Schedule 40 in B36.10M.
- NPS 10 and 12 (DN 250 and 300), Schedule 80S, wall thicknesses are not the same as those of B36.10M.
For other sizes, wall thicknesses may align, but you must verify in the applicable table. The larger point is that you cannot assume that "Schedule 40" on a carbon steel spec is the same as "Schedule 40S" on a stainless steel spec at every nominal size.
There is also a commercial reality you should understand: ASME B36.10M includes other pipe thicknesses that are also commercially available with stainless steel material. That means a stainless steel pipe could be dimensioned from B36.10M rather than B36.19M, if the material specification and engineering design allow it. When this happens, the schedule designation alone is not enough. The buyer must confirm which dimension table was used and make sure the actual wall thickness is recorded.
Procurement Checks for Carbon and Stainless Pipe Schedules
When you prepare an RFQ for seamless steel pipes or seamless butt-welding pipe fittings, keep these checks in place:
- State the governing dimension standard explicitly: ASME B36.10M or ASME B36.19M.
- Write the schedule exactly as it appears in the standard, including the "S" suffix for stainless steel pipe.
- Add the actual wall thickness as a separate field. Do not let schedule be the only thickness reference.
- Confirm the nominal size in NPS and DN to avoid conversion mistakes.
- If the project allows stainless steel pipe made to B36.10M thicknesses, request the supplier to state that on the quotation and on the MTC.
The same principle applies to fittings. A pipe schedule determines the wall thickness of the run pipe, but fittings must have compatible wall thickness and bore. When buying seamless butt-welding pipe fittings, do not assume that a fitting marked with the same schedule number will match every pipe sourced from the other standard. The fitting standard and the pipe dimensional standard must be checked together.
Inspection and Documentation Points
For inspectors, the schedule conversation must become a dimensional verification. On receipt of material, check the documentation and the physical part:
- Verify that the material test certificate references the material specification, nominal size, schedule, and measured wall thickness.
- Confirm the applicable standard is stated. For stainless pipe, check whether the schedule includes the "S" suffix.
- Measure outside diameter and wall thickness with calibrated instruments. For pipe with a thin wall, ultrasonic wall thickness measurement may be appropriate.
- Compare the measured wall thickness against the correct table for the stated standard and size. Do not compare a B36.19M dimension to a B36.10M table unless the supplier has explicitly stated that the material was produced to that table.
- Check fittings for wall thickness match with the pipe. A mismatch can create a problematic weld preparation or a discontinuity in the bore.
You should also require the supplier to clarify any ambiguity before production. If the purchase order says "stainless steel pipe, Schedule 40" without an "S" and without a wall thickness, that is a document error waiting to happen. The same is true if the buyer writes "Schedule 40S" but the project design was based on carbon steel Schedule 40. These are not the same dimension table in every size range.
Common Risks and How to Avoid Them
The most common mistakes in this area include:
- Ordering without a dimension standard. The schedule number may be understood internally, but a mill or trading company may interpret it differently.
- Assuming the same schedule designation means the same wall thickness across material standards and size ranges. This is exactly the assumption the ASME standards warn against.
- Combining material specification, size, schedule, and wall thickness into one free-text field on the RFQ. This makes review and verification harder.
- Using a carbon steel schedule table to verify stainless steel pipe, or vice versa, when the size falls into one of the known divergent ranges.
If evidence is incomplete, you must verify rather than fill the gap. Ask the supplier for the dimension table reference, the actual wall thickness, and the wall thickness tolerance. If the supplier cannot provide that, treat the offer as incomplete.
RFQ Input Checklist
At minimum, include these fields for each line item:
- Material specification and grade
- NPS or DN
- Schedule number and suffix
- Actual wall thickness in inches or millimeters
- Governing standard and edition
- Quantity and length
- For fittings: type, end preparation, and required matching pipe wall thickness
- Required documentation, including material test certificate and inspection report
A clean RFQ does not replace the standards, but it forces everyone to be explicit. The schedule number is a starting point, not the final definition of the wall thickness.
