Why Ferrite Balance Matters in Duplex Fittings
Duplex austenitic/ferritic stainless steels are selected for their combination of strength and corrosion resistance. In wrought products and weldments, the austenite-ferrite balance is a key indicator of whether the material has been properly processed and welded. For EPC buyers sourcing duplex pipe fittings, the question is often framed as "what is the ferrite fraction?" But how that fraction is measured, and what the result actually proves, depends on the test method and the specification behind it.
Two ASTM standards are frequently referenced: ASTM E562 and ASTM A923. They are sometimes confused because both relate to duplex stainless steel microstructure. However, they answer different metallurgical questions and are not interchangeable.
ASTM E562: Systematic Manual Point Counting
ASTM E562 is a standard test method for determining volume fraction by systematic manual point counting. It is based on the stereological principle that a regularly arrayed grid of points, when systematically placed over an image of a two-dimensional section through the microstructure, can provide an unbiased statistical estimate of the volume fraction of an identifiable constituent or phase. The standard requires a representative number of placements on different fields.
