Why NPT Threaded Fittings Demand Careful Inspection
NPT (National Pipe Taper) threads are among the most widely used pipe threads in the world, found in everything from low-pressure plumbing to high-pressure process piping. For EPC engineers and procurement managers, ensuring that threaded fittings meet the correct standard is not just a quality issue—it is a safety and reliability issue. A poorly gauged NPT thread can lead to leaks, joint failure, or even catastrophic system failure under pressure.
Two ASME standards form the backbone of threaded fitting specification and inspection:
- ASME B1.20.1 – Pipe Threads, General Purpose, Inch: This standard covers the dimensions and gauging of NPT, NPSC, NPTR, NPSM, and NPSL threads. It is the foundational document for understanding thread form, taper, and gauging criteria.
- ASME B16.11 – Forged Fittings, Socket-Welding and Threaded: This standard covers ratings, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and material requirements for threaded forged fittings, including Class 2000, 3000, and 6000 designations.
When you order NPT threaded fittings, you are implicitly referencing both standards. Your inspection plan must verify compliance with both.
